El Llavador de la Font del Molí Washhouse stands out for its value within both the landscape and culture
It has been many years since the municipal wash houses fell into disuse; however, due to their cultural significance and the fact they are often located in places of great scenic value, they have been restored and turned into tourist attractions. This is the case with the Llavador de la Font del Molí in Finestrat, which because of its location, next to the old Acueducto dels Molins (an aqueduct), has been included in the town’s Catalogue of Protected Cultural Heritage Assets and Sites.
Located about 300 metres from the Font del Molí site, in the middle of the terraces of fruit trees found throughout this area, its view today is quite different from when it was built. As in almost all municipalities, it was built as close as possible to the springs. Today the location is ideal, but in the past, when it had a real function, this was highly inconvenient, as its distance from the town centre meant women had to carry the heavy wet clothes for hundreds of metres.
Thankfully, its original purpose has since become obsolete and, nowadays, it only forms part of the traditional architecture and hydraulic heritage of the province of Alicante.
