A spectacular cordà (street fireworks) will signal the start of Finestrat's Patron Saint Festivities

A spectacular cordà (street fireworks) will signal the start of Finestrat's Patron Saint Festivities

The week of Patron Saint Festivities in honour of San Bartolomé and Santísimo Cristo del Remedio has arrived. The first event is programmed for Wednesday 23 August at 11.30 pm and it certainly promises to start things off with a bang. It's time for the cordà, one of the most striking and popular events on the festive schedule. Undoubtedly one of the favourites with tourists, it’s an unrivalled firework spectacle that has been passed down from generation to generation up to the present day.

From Wednesday all the way through to Sunday 27th there’ll be a whole series of musical activities, religious traditions, children's games, traditional summer open-air dancing in the town square, as well as mascletàs (daytime fireworks) and firework displays. All the festers and festeres in charge of the festivities will be opening the doors of their barraques and happily sharing the party atmosphere.

On Thursday 24 August the day will begin with a festive peal of bells at 12 noon. It's time to take the Santísimo Cristo del Remedio out in procession from the chapel in the Castell. The town’s Choral Group will be in charge of singing the festival mass. In the evening at 9 pm, the programme of events will be officially declared open with the proclamation in Plaça de la Torreta. A little later, there’ll be a multicolour mascletà in Plaça de la Unió Europea and the day will be rounded off at midnight with a dance band in Plaça del Poble.

Friday 25 August is the day of Santísimo Cristo del Remedio. The first despertà (wake-up call) will take place at 8.30 am, signalling the start of the day's events: mass in honour of the deceased, the festival train, the flower offering procession and correfocs (street fireworks) with Xarxa Teatre along the streets of L'Hort, Fonteta, Nou, Major, Forn Alt, Sant Cristòfol and La Torreta. The final event on the programme is music at midnight in Plaça de la Unió Europea.

The festivities continue over the weekend. Saturday 26 August is Youth Day, so all events on the programme are designed for young people. The day begins at 8.30 am with the second despertà. Today is the Grand Parade of Humour, which will take place along the streets from El Raval, and the programme will be rounded off at midnight with Space Elephants in Plaça de la Unió Europea.

Sunday 27 August is the day when we honour our seniors and the roots of Finestrat. The end of yet another edition of the Patron Saint Festivities is edging closer. The day begins with the third despertà. Then, at 1 pm, there will be a mass in honour of San Bartolomé followed by street fireworks in Plaça de la Unió Europea. At midday there will be a lunch in Sala Jove to thank our seniors. The end of the festivities will be marked by a spectacular Grand Firework Display by Pirotecnia Vulcano in Parc de la Font de Carrè and open-air dancing in Plaça del Poble to dance band Madre Selva.
