Doing the Camino de Santiago from Finestrat, a challenge of 1150 kilometers
Perhaps lovers of the Camino de Santiago are unaware of the existence of a route that left from Benidorm and reached Finestrat along the old Camí de l'Alfàs, entering the municipality through the Penya El Retor and passing through Carrer Sant Antoni and Les Hortetes to continue to the neighboring town of Relleu. A quarter of a century ago, a group of pilgrims brought back to the forefront this journey that started from the Marina Baixa and continued through La Torre de les Maçanes, Ibi, Onil, Biar and Villena, thus linking with the southeast road that started from Alicante.
This group of pilgrims from Benidorm, connoisseurs and lovers of the Camino de Santiago, wanted to once again value the Camino that started from this region. This Friday, February 14, at 7:00 p.m., at the Museu de Finestrat, two of the pilgrims protagonists of this feat, Fernando Escudero and Marie France, will speak about this experience in a conference, entitled "Camino de Santiago from home".
In this talk they will tell the expertise they have experienced in these 25 years, the people they have met on this journey that links the province with Astorga, in León, the point where the pilgrims who arrive by French way meet. This path, now rediscovered, has an ancient tradition. In the Municipal Archive of La Vila Joiosa there are documents that prove the presence of pilgrims in this municipality in 1734 and it is recorded that one of them was admitted to the Old Hospital dels Pobres, which was located in the heart of the historic center of this town.
The distance between Finestrat and Plaza del Obradoiro, in Santiago de Compostela, is 1150 kilometres. Quite a challenge.
