Get to know the historic centre of Finestrat through its charming squares scattered throughout the route
To walk through the historic centre of Finestrat is to enter a picture adorned with colourful houses and charming squares that dot the streets here and there. If the walk is in winter, the current season, the traveller will be impregnated with a bucolic feeling that will be exacerbated on cold days, when the chimneys leave the smell of burnt wood in the air. Smell will undoubtedly be the sense that will allow the tourist to enter into not so ancient times, in which the rural world had not yet said goodbye as a way of life in this beautiful municipality of the Marina Baixa.
There are many ways to wander and get lost in these little streets. Perhaps a very flirtatious way to do it is to get to know them having as a point of reference the small squares that are scattered throughout the historic center. You can start with the largest, the Plaça de la Unió Europea, at the entrance to the town centre and just above the underground car park. This huge rectangle is the place chosen for the big events that are organized in Finestrat, from the Christmas Market to the sporting events that attract hundreds of people.
Continuing along Carrer Nou, you will reach Plaça del Poble, the nerve centre of the old town of Finestrat, as both the Town Hall and the Church of Sant Bertomeu are just a few metres away. A short distance from here and almost unnoticed, is La Placeta, a small and branching point to access different streets and, among them, the one that leads to the most recently created square, that of the old Town Hall, which was designed as a result of demolishing the old town hall.
It is possible to reach La Placeta by another route, having in common the starting point: La Plaça del Poble. However, this time, the main entrance of the Church is taken as a reference, with its staircases, which lead directly to La Torreta, one of the most picturesque and Mediterranean squares in Finestrat. If we retrace our steps, and cross Carrer Nou again, we reach La Fonteta, which is a small square that is right on the main road, where the traveller can make a stop on the way to regain strength and taste the local cuisine offered by the different bars and restaurants.
