This Friday, the Municipal Cultural Centre “Casa de Cultura” will be hosting a talk on the role of music in Ancient Egypt
If there's one civilisation that continues to arouse passions after 5000 years, it's definitely that of Egypt. In the 21st century, when we think about visiting this African country, we think about seeing its tombs, pyramids and temples. Travelling along the Nile, with the oases on its banks and the desert on the horizon, is undoubtedly one of the best experiences that travel lovers can ever have. On Friday 3 February at 7:30 pm at the Municipal Cultural Centre in Plaça de la Unió Europea, expert José Luis Negro will bring the culture of Ancient Egypt a little closer to Finestrat.
The talk is entitled “La música del Antiguo Egipto. La música de los dioses” (The Music of Ancient Egypt. Music of the Gods). During his talk, José Luis Negro will use melodies to explore these three millennia of history and describe how music was used to celebrate war, banquets, burials and the journey to the afterlife. He'll explain how, since antiquity, music played a major role in everyday life and in the case of Egypt, it had a special link with religion because of the importance given to the afterlife.
Our speaker will talk about the material used in the instruments and how they were made from the trees that grew on the banks of the Nile. The Egyptians played music with flutes, harps and drums, mainly to please the gods and the pharaoh, who was the representative of the gods on Earth. José Luis Negro will also explain how Egyptian music influenced the philosophers of Classical Greece and how it jumped across the Mediterranean Sea to the West, with these instruments still being played today.
